High-Speed Metro Approved in Ho Chi Minh City Linking Ho Chi Minh City with Cần Giờ
A new high-speed metro line, spearheaded by private developer Vinspeed under VinGroup, will link downtown Ho Chi Minh City with Cần Giờ, following approval from HCM City People’s Committee. The Bến Thành–Cần Giờ line will reach speeds of up to 350 km/h, with an estimated investment of VNĐ102 trillion (US$3.91 billion), excluding land clearance costs. The 54-kilometre line will connect September 23rd Park in Bến Thành to a site near a developing coastal urban tourism complex in Cần Giờ.
Contextually, the line forms part of a broader strategy to enhance regional connectivity and urban growth, capitalizing on Cần Giờ’s coastal potential. The first phase comprises stations at Bến Thành and Cần Giờ, an operations control centre, and a depot. Future expansions include potential stations at Tân Thuận, Tân Mỹ, Nhà Bè, and Bình Khánh, dependent on demand.
Expert views suggest this development could significantly reduce travel time and boost economic activity along the route. The line’s six trainsets, supported by 56 carriages in total, will operate from 6 am to 11 pm with 20-minute intervals. The swift 20-minute journey presents a modern commuting option for residents and tourists alike.
Land acquisition is slated for late 2025, followed by a 30-month construction period, aiming for commercial operations to begin in 2028. The project holds a 70-year operating term, with obligations for Vinspeed to prove its financial and technical capability for timely delivery, reported Vietnam News.
