HCMC signals green light on airport

Ho Chi Minh City’s People’s Committee has notified the Ministry of Construction that it agrees with the ministry’s master plan to boost capacity by up to 40% at Tan Son Nhat Airport.

Local media reported that according to the master plan, Tan Son Nhat Airport would add a runway, a new terminal (T4) with a capacity of 15 million passengers and parking aprons with technical maintenance areas to achieve a 43 to 45 million passenger annual capacity.

The city requested information from the ministry managing the impact during expansion and its plan to improve urban traffic flow after the airport is fully completed in 2024.

Tan Son Nhat, the nation’s busiest airport, is designed to accommodate 25 million passengers a year, a capacity ceiling that was surpassed last year when it handled about 32.5 million passengers.

Civil aviation authorities estimate the country’s airports served 87 million passengers last year. That figure will rise another 10% to 15% this year.
