Global Retirement Ages: Where does Thailand stand?

What is the current official retirement age in various countries?

Regarding the statement by Deputy Prime Minister Borwornsak Uwanno on Wednesday on the policy to extend the retirement age, he revealed that “it must be done regardless; the whole world is doing it, and Thailand cannot remain still. This is because in the next 10 years, the number of elderly people will exceed the number of newborns.

Currently, two working-age people bear the burden of one elderly person, but in another 10 years, one working-age person will bear the burden of one elderly person.”

The Deputy PM further stated that Thailand cannot stay put because the global community is extending the official retirement age for civil servants.

Where does Thailand’s retirement age of 60 stand in comparison to other countries?

Comparative Overview of Retirement Ages Thailand’s official retirement age of 60 years is lower than that of many major economies and is often closer to the minimum retirement ages in Asia.

Many countries have already set their retirement age at 65 or 67 or have plans to gradually raise it.

The global trend is towards increasing the retirement age due to rising life expectancy and an aging population, as mentioned by the Deputy PM.
