GE secures order for 1.6GW Nhon Trach 3 and 4 combined cycle power plant in Vietnam

GE has secured an order to provide power generation equipment for energy company PetroVietnam Power Corporation’s (PV Power) Nhon Trach 3 and 4 combined cycle power plant.

The 1.6GW Nhon Trach plant is scheduled to become operational in 2025 and will power industrial parks in the Vung Tau provinces about 70 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

This project marks GE’s first H-Class gas turbine order in Vietnam and according to GE, will be the first power plant fueled by liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the country.

Besides the generation equipment and long-term maintenance for Nhon Trach 3 and 4, GE will also improve the efficiency of Nhon Trach 1 power plant.

For the Nhon Trach expansion, GE will provide two blocks of more than 800MW each including a GE 9HA.02 gas turbine, an STF-D650 steam turbine, a W88 generator, a Once Through Heat Recovery Steam Generator (OT HRSG) and GE’s integrated Mark VIe Distributed Control System (DCS).

The technology will improve asset visibility and efficiency and the use of natural gas will reduce emissions by 60% compared to thermal plants of the same output, states GE.

Vietnam is currently emphasising a shift from coal to gas-fired generation and is increasing renewables adoption to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

“Renewable energy is expected to grow significantly in Vietnam while at the same time, lower-carbon and highly efficient gas power generation will play a crucial role in supporting this growth while ensuring grid stability and reliability,” said Ramesh Singaram, president and CEO Asia, GE Gas Power.
