EGAT goes green by constructing 12 more Lam Ta Khong wind turbines with Wind Hydrogen Hybrid System and Fuel Cell for electricity system stability

EGAT is working to meet government’s stable power policy by signing 2 contracts to construct 12 more turbines with total capacity of 24 MW in the site of Lam Ta Khong Power Plant employing Wind Hydrogen Hybrid System with Fuel Cell Technology which is the new technology in power storage and generation. This environmental-friendly project, which helps enhancing capability of power generation from wind turbine, is not only the biggest project in Thailand but also the first project in Asia. EGAT highlights that Thailand needs to diversify energy mix by developing renewable energy together with base load power plants.

On September 6, 2016, Mr. Kornrasit Pakchotanon, EGAT Governor, signed two contracts with Hydrochina Corporation to construct Lam Ta Khong Wind Turbine Phase 2 Project and with Hydrogenics Europe N.V. and Phraram 2 Civil Engineering Co., Ltd who won the bidding to construct wind turbine stability development project. Dr. Porametee Vimolsiri, Secretary-General of the Office of National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) in charge of member of EGAT’s Board of Directors chaired this event. Mr. Ratanachai Namwong, Deputy Governor of Power Plan Development and Mr. Thanongrak Sangwatanachai, Assistant Governor-Power Plant Engineering also joined the signing ceremony at Grand Hall 1 Room, Rama Gardens Hotel.

EGAT Governor said that Lam Ta Khong Wind Turbine Phase 2 Project was constructed in response to government’s policy on power stability by diversifying fuel mix especially promoting renewable energy. For this wind turbine development project, EGAT brought new technology called Wind Hydrogen Hybrid System and Fuel Cell to conduct the research and help stabilizing electricity generation from renewable energy, emphasizing EGAT’s determination in developing Thailand’s renewable energy by adopting new technologies to break limitation of electricity generation from renewable energy.

Mr. Kornrasit also said that Lam Ta Khong Wind Turbine Phase 2 Project would be located in Sun Khao Yai Thiang, Ban Yai Thiang Nuea, Klongpai Sub District , Sikhio District and Nong Sarai Sub District, Pak Chong District , Nakhon Ratchasima Province. With a height of 94 m, rotor diameter of 116 m and horizontal axis wind turbine, this higher efficient wind turbine had total capacity of 24 MW comprising of 12 x 2 MW wind turbines. This project which would be constructed by Hydrochina Corporation with total construction cost of 1.407 billion Baht was expected to start commercial operation by October 2017.

Wind electricity generation depends on nature which is uncontrollable. So, EGAT is implementing wind turbine stability development project by bringing Wind Hydrogen Hybrid System with generating capacity of 300 kV to increase electricity storage in form of hydrogen gas working together with Fuel Cell. Hydrogen gas will be transferred through Fuel Cell to generate electricity without combustion process which is environmental friendly. The system is the new energy storage technology which can transform hydrogen gas to stable electricity. Thailand is the first country in Asia that brought Wind Hydrogen Hybrid System with Fuel Cell Technology to generate electricity. This project which is expected to be completed by September 2017 will be constructed by the joint venture between Hydrogenics Europe N.V. and Phraram 2 Civil Engineering Co., Ltd with total construction cost of 234.5 million Baht. In the future, EGAT will also build Lam Ta Khong Learning Center to be the energy and renewable energy learning source in Eastern Thailand.

However, Thailand needs to balance fuel mix. While renewable power plants are developed, base load power plants are still important for round-the-clock generating to stabilize electricity system” said Mr. Kornrasit Pakchotanon.
