Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son residents campaign against 200-billion-baht water diversion project to Tak reservoir from Mae Yuam River
Residents in Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son are stepping up a campaign against a 200-billion-baht water diversion project to feed a reservoir in Tak with water from Mae Yuam River.
Wanchai Srinuan, a local leader, said yesterday local communities whose livelihood is affected by the project are gathering signatures and will lodge a petition with the Administrative Court. He said the residents will ask the court to withdraw an environmental impact assessment (EIA) and revoke the public hearing process on the ground that the public consultation was illegitimate.
The Royal Irrigation Department, the National Environmental Board, the Office of Natural Resources and Environment Policy and Planning and the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) will be named in the lawsuit. The project involves feeding water into Bhumibol Dam in Tak to provide water security to the Central Plains river basin.
