Chevron gas field in the Gulf of Thailand to begin producing by year-end

Construction News

Chevron Thailand Exploration and Production is on track to commence production at its new Pla Thong 2 gas field in the Gulf of Thailand by year-end.

President Pairoj Kaweeyanun said yesterday that construction of the US$3.1-billion (Bt95.8 billion) gas field was still on schedule.

Pla Thong 2 will start producing natural gas at 330 million cubic feet per day from its capacity of 420MMcfd.

That would add 10 per cent to the country’s natural-gas supply per year.

Chevron has invested 70 per cent in the project, which is 200 kilometres offshore, with the rest from Mitsui Oil Exploration and PTT Exploration and Production.

The company is also looking for opportunities to increase production capacity in its other gas fields and to bid for more oil and gas exploration and production concessions if the Natural Fuels Department holds the next round.

Chevron’s total output of 1.5 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas accounts for 33 per cent of Thailand’s gas supply, Pairoj said.
