Changes to renewal of Thai driving licence approved in principle
The Cabinet has approved in principle a draft ministerial regulation on the application and renewal of driver’s licenses, allowing renewals to be completed electronically by removing the requirement for a physical aptitude test for some applicants.
Under the current 2020 regulation, license holders must appear in person to undergo a physical aptitude test for each renewal, causing inconvenience, additional costs, and travel burdens.
The new draft introduces key changes:
– Exempts applicants below a certain age or without specific medical conditions—criteria to be defined by the Director-General of the Department of Land Transport—from the physical test requirement.
– Requires applicants who exceed the age threshold or have specified health conditions to undergo at least a vision and reaction test and complete training.
The regulation will take effect 90 days after its publication in the Royal Gazette.
