Cable car plan at Phu Kradueng National Park in Thailand’s Loei province makes progress
The cable car project at Phu Kradueng National Park in Loei province is making progress with officials working on an impact assessment and the design.
Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (Dasta) director Siripakorn Cheawsamoot said his agency and the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) are developing the project together and hope to have it complete by the end of next year.
He was speaking during a recent memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing concerning the tourism development in the park. The EIA study for the cable car will be sent to the National Environment Board by July, before cabinet approval is sought for the country’s first-ever cable car project inside a national park, he said.
“We have passed the point of controversy, and we are now focusing on how to make the project beneficial for local communities,” Mr Siripakorn said. “We also have to think of ways to attract more spending from tourists and how to make them spend more time in the province during their holiday.”
He said work on the 4km cable car project may begin this year. Over 90% of locals agreed with the project as it would attract more tourists to visit the site, he added. The cabinet in February 2012 assigned the Dasta to study the project and two EIA studies were produced at the time.
However, due to concerns the ecological surrounding would be affected by an overwhelming number of tourists, the project was put on hold for a decade until the cabinet in December 2023 approved the budget for a new EIA study.
DNP chief Attapon Charoenchansa said the 1-billion-baht project should be approved by the government. Mr Attapon brushed aside concerns about the impact on the environment, saying the cable car’s carrying capacity would limit the number of passengers to about 5,000 a day.
