Bangkok Airport rail to join regional routes

Construction News Laos

The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) plans to connect Bangkok’s Airport Rail Link with other regional rail routes to link up with neighbouring countries.

Citing a study by German engineering giant Siemens, MRTA governor Yongsit Rojsrikul said the Airport Rail Link system has the potential to connect with the existing network that links with Laos and China.

The Bang Sue station could eventually serve as a regional train hub, he said.

Mr Yongsit said the MRTA also has a conceptual plan to expand the Airport Rail Link to connect Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports and to connect Suvarnabhumi with Rayong province to the east.

Mr Yongsit said a single train system must be developed to boost the rail network. The rail link to Laos would have discussed with the Lao government, he said.

Thailand’s train system would set an example for other countries in the region to follow, he said.

Citing the study, the new high-speed railway between Suvarnabhumi and Rayong would have to be built separately from existing tracks, but it could share the Airport Rail Link’s train stations, Mr Yongsit said.
