Bad news for construction workers – This building robot can lay 1,000 bricks an hour!
An Australian company has developed a robot that can build a house in two days, laying bricks at a rate of 1,000 per hour.
The robot, known as Hadrian X, is manufactured by Fastbrick Robotics and has been backed by construction giant Caterpillar who have already agreed a US$2 million deal with the company also having the option to invest a further $8 million in future.
The MD of Fastbrick Robotics, Mike Pivac said, “Fastbrick Robotics is delighted to sign a MOU with Caterpillar and welcomes the company as a new shareholder.
“Caterpillar is a globally recognised industry leader, and we look forward to collaborating with the company and uniting our teams to share ideas, pursue innovation and explore opportunities to commercialise our unique technology.”
The only role that humans are required to play is to take the robot to site and as it is mounted on the back of truck anyway, even this is very straightforward.
Pivac went on: “We are a frontier company, and we are one step closer to bringing fully automated, end to end 3D printing brick construction into mainstream.
“We’re very excited to take the world first technology we proved with the Hadrian 105 demonstrator and manufacturing a state of the art machine.”
Instead of traditional cement, Hadrian X will use a construction glue.
“By utilising a construction adhesive rather than traditional mortar, the Hadrian X will maximise the speed of the build and strength and thermal efficiency of the final structure,” the firm said.
The robot works by using CAD and is capable of laying bricks of any size.
If required, the machine can also cut and grind bricks to ensure a perfect fit. The robotic ‘hand’ is attached to a boom that is 28 metres long and is capable of picking up bricks and laying them in any sequence.
