A High-Style Thai Retreat

This cliff-side home on the resort island of Phuket in Thailand sits on 2.4 acres and overlooks the Andaman Sea. The 21,022-square-foot property consists of multiple Thai-style pavilions with pitched roofs and wooden columns. It remains on the market for $9.2 million since first being listed in November, 2013. The home was featured on WSJ.com as an Asia House of the Day in December.

The house has four bedrooms, each with sea views. The outdoor entertaining areas include a large living space and lookout area—the home’s focal point—as well as an infinity pool and barbecue and jungle salas (open Thai-style pavilions). Non-covered terrace areas total 6,598 square feet.

The five-level main structure has a roof made of New Zealand pine and mixed-tone Chinese slate. The interiors include gold-leaf accent walls, teak wood and gray floor tiles to create a Zen-like ambience. The lights from the bustling tourist town of Patong, about 9 miles away, are visible in the distance. Owners Robert van Paridon, a Dutch financial trader based in Singapore, and his wife, Trinidad, bought the lot in 2005; construction of the villa was completed two years later. “It is in an ideal location in Thailand. It has good infrastructure—I am a trader so I need to have the Internet too, mobile service, and easy access to things like that,” says Mr. van Paridon. He says they are selling because they have less time to visit due to work commitments. “High-end homes in Phuket (above $3 million) are trading sideways at the moment,” says Martin Phillips of Phillips Property. Within this market, he feels there is more interest in beachfront properties, which are harder to come by. The property is listed with Jon Hawryluk of Awesome Villas.
