The Reroofing of Chachoengsao’s Famous Wat Sothon Wararam – A Scaffolder’s Dream Job
Back in April 2026, we published ‘Day-trip from Bangkok to Chachoengsao’s well-known Wat Sothon Wararam’ describing a visit to one of Thailand’s most important religious sites. Located on the banks of the Bang Pakong River, around 70 kilometres east of Bangkok, Wat Sothon Wararam is home to Luangpho Phuttha Sothon, one of Thailand’s most revered Buddha images.
The temple complex is renowned for its impressive marble-clad ubosot (ordination hall) and striking architecture..
During our visit in March 2026, major reroofing works were underway on the ubosot.
As someone who has spent all of my career in the construction industry, I was immediately drawn to the scale and complexity of the scaffolding required to access the roof and protect the structure during the works.
Recently, my wife suggested another visit to the wat to make merit and hopefully attract a little good fortune.
While the temple remains as impressive as ever, it was the extensive temporary works that again captured my attention.
The vast network of scaffolding covering the roof would undoubtedly be a dream project for any scaffolder.
The sheer volume of material, together with the challenges of working high above an active place of worship and protecting the ornate structure below, demonstrates the planning and expertise required to undertake major restoration works on one of Thailand’s most important religious landmarks.
Naturally, I could not resist taking a few photographs. For those with an interest in construction, temporary works, or simply large-scale engineering projects, the reroofing of Wat Sothon Wararam provides a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes of preserving an important piece of Thailand’s cultural and religious heritage.
