Nakhon Si Thammarat province’s Mahathat temple bid nears World Heritage win
Thailand is facing a crucial milestone as it awaits the decision on the nomination of Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan in Nakhon Si Thammarat province as a new World Heritage site, said Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchart Chomklin.
If approved, it would become Thailand’s sixth cultural site and ninth overall, marking the first World Heritage site in southern Thailand, the minister added.
Mr Suchart also said Unesco has commended Thailand for maintaining strong conservation standards, confirming that none of the country’s World Heritage sites has been placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger.
The update came during the 48th Session of the World Heritage Committee, held on Tuesday and Wednesday, where Thailand’s management of heritage sites was recognised as effective and consistent with its obligations under the World Heritage Convention.
Natural resources and environment permanent secretary Raweewan Bhuridej credited the achievement to policies integrating heritage conservation with sustainable development, alongside coordinated efforts by multiple agencies.
Ms Raweewan said this builds global confidence in Thailand’s stewardship and lifts momentum for new nominations.
The Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning (ONEP), acting as Thailand’s focal point for the World Heritage Convention, continues to coordinate monitoring, risk assessment, and management measures to preserve the outstanding universal value of heritage sites.
Officials stressed that the successful nomination of Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan as a World Heritage site would not mark the end of their responsibility, but rather the beginning of long-term obligations.
Effective management plans must cover conservation, tourism, disaster risk, community participation and regular reporting to Unesco.
