37‑kilometre expressway plan, linking the mainland to Koh Samui receives boost

Speaking after the signing, Mr Phiphat said the 37‑kilometre project, linking the mainland to Koh Samui, is designed not only to improve transport access but also to serve as a shared corridor for essential public utilities. The construction plan includes a main cable‑stayed bridge, a secondary extradosed bridge and several standard bridges.

He noted that integrating utility systems into the expressway will support daily life on the island, strengthen tourism and promote long‑term regional growth, while reducing redundant investment and improving service efficiency across agencies.

Exat governor Surachet Laophulsuk said the 50‑billion‑baht project would significantly enhance transport reliability, public safety and overall quality of life.

Currently, access to Koh Samui relies heavily on ferry services, which are vulnerable to adverse weather conditions and can disrupt travel for residents, tourists and emergency services. The expressway is expected to substantially reduce these risks.

The projected toll for four‑wheel private vehicles is set at 1,000 baht, compared with the current ferry cost of 550 baht plus 170 baht per passenger. However, travel time is expected to drop dramatically from 1.5–3 hours to just 15–20 minutes.

While ferry services will continue to operate, they will be relocated to Chaiya and Don Sak districts to better align with the new transport network.
