Vietnam’s Ca Mau airport to shut down for 1 year for $94M upgrade

The airport in Vietnam’s southernmost province, Ca Mau, will close for 12 months starting Oct. 30 for a VND2.4-trillion (US$94 million) upgrade to transform it into a regional gateway.

Its runway will be lengthened from 1,500 to 2,400 meters and widened, and new taxiways and an apron for parking three Airbus A320/A321 jets will be built.

The existing terminal will be expanded to handle 500,000 passengers a year, with room to grow to one million, five times its current capacity.

Built during the French colonial period, Ca Mau Airport has long been limited to small turboprops like the ATR72 and Embraer E190, and now gets just one daily flight from Ho Chi Minh City.

Officials expect the upgrade, scheduled for completion in October 2026, to unlock more domestic and potentially international routes, strengthening the Mekong Delta’s air links.
