Thailand’s Department of Highways Begins Dismantling Damaged M82 Bridge, Advances Work on Tha Chin River Span
The Department of Highways (DOH) has begun dismantling bridge sections damaged by the collapse of a launching gantry (LG) crane on the M82 motorway, while concrete casting to connect the balanced cantilever bridge across the Tha Chin River has been completed at one location, with two additional closures scheduled for next week.
The DOH said the update marks the first week of on-site operations following the January 15 crane collapse on Rama II Road, which damaged two spans of prestressed concrete decking in Section 7 of the project.
Inspections identified penetrations in the deck, damage to prestressing tendons and cracks in box girder components, leading authorities to order their removal on safety grounds.
As of January 31, one LG unit had been moved to a safe position, while a second was repositioned to prepare for dismantling the damaged beams.
Engineers are reviewing calculation documents and work methods and installing real-time structural health monitoring systems before further operations proceed.
On the Tha Chin River crossing, the DOH said concrete casting and tendon stressing have been completed at one closure point.
Work on the remaining two points is expected to begin next week to ensure proper load transfer in line with the design and allow the removal of high-risk temporary scaffolding.
Meanwhile, a multi-agency committee continues to investigate the crane collapse, collecting physical evidence and planning forensic engineering tests and computer simulations to determine the cause and assess whether the contractor complied with engineering standards and contractual requirements.
