State Railway of Thailand (SRT) approves construction contracts for two extensions of the Bangkok Red Line electric railway
The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) board has approved construction contracts totalling more than 20 billion baht for two extensions of the Bangkok Red Line suburban electric railway.
Anan Phonimdaeng, acting SRT governor, said yesterday that the approvals came at the board’s meeting on Thursday, marking a major step forward for the long-delayed projects.
The board approved the hiring of UT Joint Venture to construct the Light Red Line extension from Siriraj to Taling Chan and Salaya in Nakhon Pathom, with a total contract value of 14.72 billion baht. It also approved the appointment of Unique Engineering and Construction Plc to build the Dark Red Line extension from Rangsit to Thammasat University’s Rangsit campus in Pathum Thani, valued at 6.05 billion baht.
The Siriraj–Taling Chan–Salaya extension will stretch 20.5 kilometres, comprising 13.83km of at-grade track and 6.67km of elevated sections. The project includes nine stations: Siriraj, Bang Khunnon, Taling Chan Floating Market, Rama VI Bridge, Bang Kruai–Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat), Ban Chimphli, Kanchanaphisek, Sala Thammasop and Salaya. Three additional stations were also approved under the same contract.
UT Joint Venture, led by Unique Engineering and Construction Plc with Trusty Construction Co, submitted the lowest bid through an electronic bidding process, at 9.7 million baht below the median price.
For the Rangsit–Thammasat University extension, the approved section covers 8.84km of at-grade track with four stations: Khlong Nueng, Bangkok University, Chiang Rak and Thammasat University Rangsit Campus. Unique Engineering and Construction Plc offered the lowest bid for this project, undercutting the median price by 7.96 million baht.
