Phnom Penh Metro preliminary study issued

Ambitious preliminary plans for a metro railway in Phnom Penh have been issued by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.

In early March 2025, experts from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) came to Cambodia and met separately with leaders of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction to study the Phnom Penh Metro and Light Rail projects.

The mission of experts to review the preliminary study project for the Phnom Penh subway network is in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, which was signed on September 26, 2024 in Beijing, People’s Republic of China.

The first meeting of the working group for the preparation and implementation of the preliminary study project for the subway network was held to collect inputs at designated locations along major roads and corridors in Phnom Penh, as well as inspecting stations, bus stops, Phnom Penh Railway Station, Phnom Penh International Airport, Techo International Airport, new development areas, new satellite cities, and other locations to identify priority roads, bridges, and routes for the feasibility study and feasibility study of building a public transportation network in Phnom Penh.

According to the study report published by the Ministry of Public Works, there are four subway lines planned in Phnom Penh, each line ranging from 16 kilometers to 29 kilometers long.

It should be noted that the Phnom Penh Metro and Light Rail Project connecting Phnom Penh and Techo International Airport came about after the Royal Government, on November 17, 2023, issued a decision on the establishment of an inter-ministerial committee to promote the study of the light rail project connecting Phnom Penh to the new airport and the Phnom Penh Metro, chaired by His Excellency Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia.
