Ho Chi Minh City Resumes Major Tidal Flood-Control Project
HCM City restarted its long-delayed VNĐ10 trillion (US$338 million) tidal flood-control project as of February 2, with the trial operation of the Bến Nghé sluice gate. The investor has also proposed extending the technical warranty period to mitigate operational risks during the early phases. “With a high sense of responsibility…we have resumed trial operations…and restarted the entire tidal flood-control project,” Tiến stated, underlining a commitment to meeting construction goals and operational safety.
The project comprises eight large tidal control sluice gates, including Bến Nghé and Tân Thuận, with spans from 20 to 160 meters. Cường expressed satisfaction at overcoming significant delays, crediting a special Government resolution and improved collaborations. The city approved an adjustment to the project’s total investment in November 2025, with the State Audit reviewing the terms.
An updated contract appendix signed in December 2025 provides a legal foundation for ongoing construction. Cường highlighted plans to accelerate land allocation, support credit negotiations, and facilitate operational procedures.
Looking forward, HCM City is considering a second project phase to enhance flood-control effectiveness and adapt to climate-change impacts.
