Highways Department Halts Bangkok’s Rama 2 Projects Using Launching Gantry Cranes After Collapse
The Department of Highways has ordered an immediate suspension of all construction projects using launching gantry cranes following a crane collapse on Rama 2 Road in Samut Sakhon, as authorities move toward possible contract termination.
Department of Highways director-general Piyapong Jiwattanakulpaisarn said on Friday that engineering teams from the department, the contractor and the Engineering Institute of Thailand are working to safely dismantle and remove collapsed steel structures at the site near the Tha Chin River bridge.
Two 500-ton cranes and several 200-ton cranes have been deployed, with crews first securing unstable concrete and steel components above the roadway to prevent further accidents.
Some sections will be cut and removed in stages, with clearance expected to be completed within 14 days.
Piyapong said the operation is complex because parts of the structure remain suspended, posing risks of sudden movement near active traffic lanes and overhead power lines.
All work under Section 7 of the Rama 2 contract has been halted. Other elevated-road projects nationwide that use launching gantry cranes have also been ordered to stop pending safety inspections.
He said the Department of Highways has formed a fact-finding committee with a seven-day timeframe, while the Transport Ministry has set up a separate panel to investigate the cause of the collapse and consider administrative action, including possible contract termination.
