Hanoi Launches $1.4 Billion Metro Line Construction

Hanoi has commenced construction on the Nam Thang Long–Tran Hung Dao metro line, a 10.9 km project expected to modernize transportation through the city’s Old Quarter. The line will feature ten stations, with 8.9 km running underground, and aims to enhance connectivity between iconic streets such as Hang Giay and Hang Dao. Scheduled for completion by 2029, it is a significant step in Hanoi’s metro expansion, funded by Japanese development aid and local budgets.

The metro line will include ten trains, traveling up to 110 kph on elevated sections and 80 kph underground, and serve seven key wards in the city. A significant feature is the Xuan Dinh Depot, a 11.3-hectare site set to integrate transport with commercial and housing development, creating a growth hub in northern Hanoi. Hoan Kiem Lake Station, one of the ten stations, will blend transit solutions with public and cultural spaces, reinforcing the concept of transit-oriented development (TOD).

Experts see the project as a crucial addition to Hanoi’s transport infrastructure, facilitating connections between Ba Dinh Ward and the Old Quarter, and integrating with three other metro lines. The long-term goal involves extending the line to Noi Bai International Airport, further strengthening Hanoi’s economic and tourism sectors. Completion of this metro line marks a critical move towards fulfilling Hanoi’s transport master plan, aiming for a 15-line network by 2030.

Looking forward, the line should mitigate urban congestion and emissions while supporting Hanoi’s vision of a carbon-neutral future. Expected to manage up to 30% of public transport demand, the metro network will significantly contribute to sustainable urban mobility. Currently, Hanoi operates two metro lines, with Cat Linh–Ha Dong open since 2021, and Nhon–Hanoi Railway Station’s elevated section operational as of August 2024.
