Experts, Election candidates weigh in on Thailand’s site safety standards following deadly crane collapse on northeast-bound train
The president of the Structural Engineers Association of Thailand has raised concerns about safety standards in Thailand’s large-scale construction projects following a deadly crane collapse on the northeast-bound train in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Sikhiu district.
Amorn Pimanmas, the association president and a professor at Kasetsart University’s Engineering Faculty, said while the incident requires an investigation, two similar incidents have taken place which raised serious concerns about safety standards at large sites in public areas.
He said the object which fell in yesterday’s train accident is a heavy support base placed beneath a steel launching truss used in construction, and each support weighs between 20 and 30 tonnes. Authorities need to examine how the base was secured to the structure, whether installation was carried out correctly and why such a heavy structure was able to fall on to active railway tracks.
He said the train accident is similar to two incidents involving the Lat Krabang–On Nut elevated road project in July 2023 and the Rama II elevated expressway project in November 2024. The Lat Krabang–On Nut road project resulted in two fatalities and over 10 injuries while the Rama II bridge beam collapse in Samut Sakhon’s Muang district killed six people and injured nine.
Thai Kao Mai Party leader Suchatvee Suwansawat said yesterday the latest incident was shameful and unacceptable, saying such collapses at major construction sites are taking place repeatedly. He said Thailand lacks a proper public safety law and a single agency responsible for preventing such accidents, adding investigations are usually handled by project owners themselves, which rarely leads to accountability or punishment.
Mr Suchatvee said his party is pushing for a public safety law that would establish an independent central body to investigate accidents transparently and pursue both civil and criminal cases against safety negligence.
People’s Party (PP) leader Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut said the focus must be on addressing root causes particularly weaknesses in state procurement and oversight. He also called for greater transparency in government contracting, along with independent inspectors and observers for major public projects. PP candidate for Bangkok Suphanat Meenchainan criticised Italian-Thai Development Plc, the contractor involved, saying the company must take responsibility and apologise.
