China’s Envision turbines picked for 600-MW wind project in Sekong and Attapeu provinces in Southern Laos
Turbines made by Chinese greentech company Envision Group will be powering the 600-MW Monsoon wind project in Laos, which is set to create the largest wind park in the ASEAN region and supply power to Vietnam.
Envision Group announced on Monday a Letter of Intent (LoI) to supply turbines for the project with its developer Impact Energy Asia Development Limited (IEAD). The latter is a joint venture of Impact Wind Investment Ltd and renewable energy firm BCPG Public Co Ltd.
The construction of the Monsoon park is scheduled to begin this year, with the plant expected to be switched on in 2023. To be installed in the Sekong and Attapeu provinces in Southern Laos, the wind park will be equipped with 133 units of Envision’s EN-171 turbines of 4.51 MW each. Once up and running, the machines will be generating more than 1,700 MWh of electricity per year.
The output of the Monsoon wind farm will be delivered from Laos to Central Vietnam through a dedicated 500-kV transmission line. The plant will be run through a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Vietnam Electricity (EVN).
Last year, Japan’s Mitsubishi Corp announced plans to invest in the Monsoon project. Separately, plans are in progress for the development of the Xekong project that envisages a 1,000-MW extension of the Monsoon wind park. IEAD’s affiliate, Impact Electrons Siam Company Limited (IES), recently obtained exclusive rights from the government of Laos to conduct a feasibility study and preliminary environment impact assessment for Xekong.
