Ceremony for Bridge Joining of the Myanmar-Korea Friendship (Dala) Bridge held
A Ceremony for the Bridge Joining of the Myanmar-Korea Friendship (Dala) Bridge was held in Yangon Region on Friday, with the attendance of Acting President and Chairman of State Security and Peace Commission Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.
On their arrival at the venue, Union Minister for Construction U Myo Thant reported on the salient points of the bridge construction project. At the auspicious time, the Acting President formaly opened the ceremony to pour concrete for bridge joining. After the ceremony, the Acting President and party inspected the progress of bridge construction.
The Myanmar-Korea Friendship (Dala) Bridge construction project was initiated following discussions during the 2012 goodwill visit to Korea by then-President U Thein Sein, during which both countries agreed to implement a bilateral friendship project in Myanmar.
The implementation of the project began in 2013, and by 2015, preliminary engineering works and design processes had started in preparation for the construction phase. During the construction period, the project faced delays and challenges due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, under the current government’s administration, the project was able to be completed with supplementary funding from the state budget. The Myanmar-Korea Friendship (Dala) Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge with four traffic lanes. The length of the Main bridge is 2,264 ft with 1,891 ft long approach bridge on Yangon side and 1,972 ft on Dala side.
Yangon and Dala approach roads expand 3,453 ft, and making the total length of 6,127 ft. This bridge is the highest-clearance cable-stayed bridge ever built in Myanmar. It has a clearance height of 160 ft with 990 ft in width, allowing international sea-going vessels weighing up to 15,000 tons, as well as large domestic ships, to pass beneath it.
The bridge can withstand 75 tons of load. Upon completion, the bridge will significantly improve connectivity between Yangon Region and the townships of Dala, Twantay, Kawhmu, and Kungyangon, as well as to towns in Ayeyawady Region and other coastal areas.
It is also expected to reduce current traffic congestion in Yangon to a certain extent. Furthermore, the bridge will contribute to the overall development of social affairs, economy, education, healthcare, and transportation, and is expected to become a major landmark of Yangon City.
