Cambodia’s Koh Tonsay Island tourism port construction rescheduled to start construction in early November 2021

The Koh Tonsay Island Tourism Port has been rescheduled to start construction in early November. The project was previously set for ground breaking in mid-October.

Located 4 km off of Kep province’s mainland, the Koh Tonsay port is part of Asia Development Bank (ADB)’s Greater Mekong Subregion Tourism Infrastructure for Inclusive Growth Project phase II.

The rescheduling of the construction is mainly due to poor weather, said Rao Sokha, deputy governor of Kep province.

“The tourism port construction has been reset to start early in November because of high rainfall partly affecting the construction process,” Sokha said on Monday.

Procurement of the port was on September 16, 2021 organized by ADB, and a construction contract was provided to local firm Vimean Chey Co Ltd, for the $1.6 million project.

The construction is set to take 15 months to complete.

Rao Sokha, deputy governor of Kep province, said in September that the facility will contribute to the tourism sector on the island, facilitating the travel of both tourists and local people.

“The port will facilitate the travel of tourists to the island because currently, tourists and people have to land on the beach when they arrive on the island,” he said.

The infrastructure to be established at the Koh Tonsay Tourism Port includes a 130 metre pier and a 740 metre concrete walkway linking the pier tourism terminal to restaurants and bungalows along the beach.

The province is also currently renovating an onshore international tourist port, located across the Kep bay from Koh Tonsay Island, which will handle modern ships with 200-300 passengers from other ports and neighbouring countries such as Vietnam and Thailand.
