Cambodia’s Battambang Completes Construction of Massive Water Treatment Facility to Meet Growing Urban Demand
New high-capacity plant set to launch in early 2026 will double the provincial capital’s clean water supply through advanced Chinese engineering
The skyline of Battambang’s Kampong Seima area has been permanently transformed with the 100 percent completion of the province’s third and largest water treatment plant. This major infrastructure milestone, announced by H.E. Ut Kloeung, Director General of the Battambang Water Supply Authority, represents a strategic move to secure the region’s water future. Built by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, the facility is designed with a massive production capacity of 50,000 cubic meters of clean water per day. This addition is expected to alleviate long-standing pressure on the city’s existing water grid and provide a reliable foundation for the province’s rapid residential and commercial expansion.
Scheduled to officially begin operations in early 2026, the plant will serve a dual purpose of stabilizing the water supply within Battambang city while simultaneously extending its reach to surrounding target areas. The project reflects a broader national trend in Cambodia where provincial authorities are partnering with international engineering firms to modernize essential utilities. By utilizing raw water from the Sangkae River, the treatment plant employs multi-stage filtration and purification processes to ensure the final product meets stringent national drinking water standards. Officials have noted that the completion of the physical structure is just the beginning, as technical testing and quality control phases will dominate the activities throughout the coming months.
The integration of this third facility into the local network is seen as a vital component of the provincial development strategy. Currently, as the population and industrial activity in Battambang grow, the demand for clean water has outpaced the capacity of older systems.
