Cambodia’s Bakheng water plant construction proceed as planned

The construction of the Bakheng Water Supply Project in the first and second phases is proceeding smoothly as planned despite the Covid-19.

The construction of the first phase of the project – capacity of 195,000 cubic meter per day is now 60 percent completed while the second phase with 195,000 cubic meter capacity is nearly 40 percent completed, the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority (PPWSA) said in a statement issued on Monday.

“The management of Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority has paid close attention to the water supply by trying to accelerate the construction of the Bakheng water treatment plant in accordance with the plan as well as the study of the master plan until 2030 to meet the demand for clean water in Phnom Penh and Takhmao city,” read the statement.

The project is financed by two loans worth $186.4 million from the [AFD], a $100 million loan from the [EIB], an up-to-$15 million grant from the [EU] through the Asia Investment Facility and direct investment by PPWSA worth $80 million.

With both phases completed in 2024, the capital’s water production capacity will increase by 65 percent – or from 0.6 to one million cubic meters per day according to the PPWSA, citing that it is enough to meet the current shortage in Phnom Penh, which is estimated at 200,000 cubic meters of water per day during the peak of the dry season.

Currently, the demand for clean water to residents in Phnom Penh and Takhmao city, with water supplied from Phnom Penh, is about 800,000 m3 per day, a stunning 200,000 m3 overcapacity which is only 600,000 m3 per day, said PPWSA.
