State Railway of Thailand (SRT) wants direct link set up with hospital
The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has moved to overhaul the design of its Red Line suburban railway extension, proposing to relocate and rename the planned Ratchawithi Station to create a direct link with Ramathibodi Hospital, in a bid to improve passenger convenience and urban connectivity.
The proposal, unveiled at a public hearing on Tuesday, calls to shift the location about 100 metres south of its original site, rename it “Ramathibodi Station” and build an elevated skywalk connecting directly with hospital buildings.
The changes aim to provide seamless access for patients, medical staff and the general public, while enhancing the efficiency of Bangkok’s mass transit network.
Speaking after chairing the consultation at Mahidol University, Atthapol Kaoprasert, chief engineer for special projects and construction at the SRT, said the railway operator was committed to maximising the benefits of mass transit development for urban residents.
As part of this effort, the SRT is revising key elements of the Light Red Line (Bang Sue–Phaya Thai–Makkasan–Hua Mak) and the Dark Red Line (Bang Sue–Hua Lamphong), particularly the design of Ratchawithi Station under the missing link project.
Under the revised plan, the station will be moved from the northern side of the Uphaichetsaduthit intersection to the southern side.
The station’s new name is meant to reflect its function as a key transport hub facilitating the use of Ramathibodi Hospital.
A skywalk will also be built linking the station with a future hospital transit centre, allowing passengers to access medical facilities without having to navigate busy roads.
Mr Atthapol said the proposal stemmed from a request by Ramathibodi Hospital, which sought direct
rail access to improve travel convenience and safety, particularly for patients with mobility challenges and healthcare workers who commute daily.
Following the hearing, the SRT will compile feedback from all stakeholders for submission as part of a revised environmental impact assessment (EIA) report to the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning.
