At least 32 dead 64 injured after crane falls on moving train in Thailand’s Korat
Dozens injured after express train derails, PM Anutin says contractor must be held responsible

NAKHON RATCHASIMA — At least 32 people were killed and 64 others injured after a construction crane fell onto a moving train in this northeastern province on Wednesday morning.
The incident occurred at 9.05am as the Bangkok-Ubon Ratchathani express train was passing through Ban Thanon Khot in Sikhiu district, about 230 kilometres northeast of Bangkok. The train was reportedly carrying 195 passengers and crew and travelling at 120km per hour.
The crane fell onto two carriages of the train, according to the State Railway of Thailand (SRT). The impact of the collapse — involving a crane used to lift concrete girders for an elevated high-speed rail line — caused the coaches to derail and catch fire, according to local media reports.
According to initial reports, the crane first fell onto the second carriage, which had 40 passengers inside. A fire erupted, making escape difficult as the air-conditioned train had electric automatic doors and windows that could not be opened by hand.
‘Two explosions’
Local resident Mitr Intrpanya, who was at the scene, said he heard a loud noise “like something sliding down from above, followed by two explosions”.
“When I went to see what had happened, I found the crane sitting on a passenger train with three carriages,” the 54-year-old told AFP. “The metal from the crane appeared to strike the middle of the second carriage, slicing it in half.”
Rescuers used hydraulic cutters to free trapped passengers from the wreckage, transporting them to Sikhiu, Sung Noen and Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima hospitals.
The Ministry of Public Health reported at 5.20pm that there were 32 confirmed deaths, three people still missing and 64 injured people. Of the injured, seven were seriously injured, 19 sustained moderate injuries and 38 were slightly injured, it said.
A war room was established at Sikhiu Hospital, where most of the injured were receiving treatment. An emergency centre was also set up at the site to assist passengers with alternative routes.
Investigation begins
Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said he had ordered the SRT to investigate the cause of the crane collapse.
SRT governor Anan Phonimdaeng said a fact-finding committee would be established to determine the cause within 15 days.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul told reporters that the project supervisors would be held accountable.
“These kind of incidents happen very regularly,” he said in Bangkok.
“I have heard that it is the same company (involved in previous accidents). It is time to change the law to blacklist construction companies that are repeatedly responsible for accidents.”
The girder launcher crane, used in precast post-tensioned bridge construction, belonged to Italian-Thai Development Plc, which is also the sole contractor on the bridge project, according to Theerachote Rujiviphat, an engineering consultant and adviser to China Railway Design Corporation.
Pichet Kunadhamraks, director-general of the Department of Rail Transport, said the contractor had disobeyed a safety order from the Ministry of Transport, which prohibits work on the elevated high-speed railway structure when a train or any vehicle is passing underneath.
He also said a fail-safe system on a piece of equipment at the construction site failed because the machine did not stop when it stalled. It continued operating and that led to the disaster.
Mr Pichet said the contractor would face both criminal and civil lawsuits.
Fast train to China
The rail bridge construction is part of Section 1 (Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima) of the $5.4-billion Thai-Chinese high-speed railway project, which has encountered numerous delays since work first began in 2017.
The project ultimately aims to connect Bangkok to Kunming in China via Laos, possibly by 2030, as part of China’s Belt and Road infrastructure initiative.
China’s foreign ministry said Beijing was looking into what happened, and “attaches great importance to the safety of this project and its personnel”.
As a result of the accident, special express trains 21 and 22 (Bangkok-Ubon Ratchathani-Bangkok) have been cancelled until further notice.
Route adjustments were made for 14 other trains operating between Bangkok and Ubon Ratchathani as well as between Bangkok and Surin on Wednesday.
