Flood of support for 70-year-old tourist attraction

A video of an elephant show going ahead as scheduled in an empty arena with only a single spectator at a crocodile farm and zoo in Samut Prakan province has brought a massive wave of visitors, helping revive the fortunes of the 70-year-old attraction.

Images shared widely online show sold-out crocodile and elephant shows, and vehicles queueing to get into the zoo in tambon Thai Ban in Muang district, in the week after the solitary-watcher video was posted on TikTok by user “ATOMISATOM” on Aug 28.

The video, which had over 5 million views by Monday, showed an empty auditorium with just one person watching an elephant performance, with the caption: “They continue the show, even if there is only one person watching.” (continues below)

Samutprakan Crocodile Farm and Zoo was established in 1950 and has grown to become one of the largest in the world. According to provincial travel website, the facility houses about 60,000 crocodiles, including freshwater, saltwater and Siamese crocodiles, as well as other animals, including elephants, tigers, hippos, capybaras and horses.

Zoo director Charoon Youngprapakorn, who took the position in 2024, said the farm had suffered a severe decline since the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic, which forced its closure for four long years. During that period the business survived only through efforts to sustain its operations, but the facilities deteriorated over time.

The attraction was reopened in April 2024, but visitor numbers fell short of expectations, Mr Charoon said. And then everything changed, after the video of the solitary spectator went viral.

The post on TikTok quickly attracted online sympathy and praise for the dedicated staff and the animals in their care on media outlets and from internet influencers. The zoo’s Facebook page has since been flooded with comments from online users saying they would visit the place soon.
The zoo said it had to schedule additional crocodile-catching shows to accommodate the crowd.

“Thank you Khun Atom [the TikTok user] for causing this great change so an old zoo can move forward…Thank you everyone for your support sent to the staff members and animals through every channel,” Samutprakan Crocodile Farm & Zoo Thailand Facebook page wrote in a post on Thursday.
The tourist farm’s revival was described by many as clear evidence of “the power of social media”.

The farm opens every day from 8am to 6pm and charges 100 baht for Thai adults and 50 baht for Thai children. Foreigners pay 400 baht for adults and 200 baht for children. All children under 80 centimetres tall enter free.

The ticket charges include watching the daring stunts of trained handlers wrestling or putting their heads in the open jaws of crocodiles, and elephants performing tricks and feats like tightrope walking, dancing and painting
