New Chai Nat-Gulf of Thailand Flood Diversion Canal aims to curb floods
The Office of National Water Resources (ONWR) plans to begin construction of the Chai Nat-Gulf of Thailand Flood Diversion Canal in 2027, in an effort to tackle chronic flooding across the lower Chao Phraya River basin — one of the country’s most economically vital regions.
The plan was announced on Wednesday by ONWR secretary-general Chayan Muangsong after visiting several sites in Chai Nat, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Chachoengsao, and Samut Prakan to review key components of the government’s water management plan for the Chao Phraya River basin.
Mr Chayan was joined by government officials and representatives from major financial institutions, including the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank, during the visit. They inspected critical infrastructure points, including the Chai Nat–Pa Sak canal gate and the Manorom water gate in Chai Nat, before continuing to the Rama VI Dam in Ayutthaya.
The delegation then visited pumping stations in Chachoengsao and Samut Prakan, where they received briefings on efforts to optimise water discharge into the Bang Pakong River and the Gulf of Thailand.
Mr Chayan emphasised the urgency of addressing persistent flooding in the Chao Phraya basin, where seasonal water surges often exceed the river’s capacity. He pointed to the devastating 2011 floods, which caused widespread damage and economic losses estimated at 1.43 trillion baht, as a stark reminder of the need for decisive action.
The diversion canal project has already been approved by the National Water Resources Committee and passed its Environmental Impact Assessment, thus clearing key regulatory hurdles. It is also a central component of a broader nine-part flood mitigation master plan for the lower basin.
