Thailand approves EIAs for Suvarnabhumi expansion, two other airport projects
Approves third expansion of Suvarnabhumi Airport, upgrades to Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport and the construction of Bueng Kan Airport.
Environmental impact assessments (EIA) have been approved for three airport projects in Thailand, including the third expansion of Suvarnabhumi Airport, upgrades to Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport and the construction of Bueng Kan Airport.
The approvals were granted during the first 2026 meeting of the National Environment Board at Government House on March 12.
The Bueng Kan airport project, valued at about 8.2 billion baht, will be located around 12km from the city centre and near the Fifth Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge.
Planned on more than 4,400 rai of land in So Phisai and Muang districts, the airport is expected to improve air transport access to Thailand’s northeastern border region and strengthen connectivity with neighbouring countries including Laos, Vietnam and Myanmar.
Traffic forecasts estimate around 149,000 passengers and 1,244 flights annually by 2032, or about four flights per day.
If approvals proceed as scheduled, construction could begin in 2029 with operations targeted for 2032.
The board also approved EIAs for three additional infrastructure projects:
- Road SK.2055 linking Highway 35 to Samut Songkhram town,
- a four-lane expansion of Highway 201 between Ban Non Han and Ban Pha Nok Khao, and,
- the Den Chai–Chi Mai double-track railway.
