Pheu Thai Proposes Universal Design Law to Expand Access to Public Spaces
The Pheu Thai Party has unveiled policy proposals aimed at making public spaces accessible to people of all ages and abilities, including children, the elderly and persons with disabilities, ahead of the upcoming election.
Chanin Rungtanakiat, deputy secretary-general of the party and a party-list MP candidate, said Pheu Thai plans to propose a Universal Design law that would require agencies involved in the construction and development of public spaces to comply with unified standards ensuring equal access for all.
The standards would cover sidewalks, public transport systems and access to government services for people with disabilities.
He said the party also wants to revitalise underutilised urban areas—such as abandoned parks and spaces beneath expressways—by redeveloping them into public facilities including sports grounds, standardised public parks and community markets.
Such projects, he said, would improve urban quality of life, encourage safe outdoor activity and generate broader economic benefits.
