Cross-border road in Nakhon Phanom nears completion, supporting economic zone
Thailand’s Department of Rural Roads (DRR) anticipates opening road for public use early next year
NAKHON PHANOM — A key road linking an aircraft maintenance centre with a major border wholesale trade hub near the Third Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge is now 90% complete and expected to be fully operational by early 2026, according to the Department of Rural Roads (DRR).
The 23.10-kilometre route connects the aircraft repair centre with the border trade hub and Highway 212 in Tha Uthen district, enhancing transport efficiency within the northeastern province and with Laos. Highway 212 stretches from Nong Khai along the Mekong River through Nakhon Phanom to Mukdahan, then continues south to Ubon Ratchathani.
The project, costing 949 million baht, will serve as a vital route between Nakhon Phanom Airport and the Third Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge (Nakhon Phanom–Khammouane), supporting the province’s Special Economic Zone and cross-border mobility.
The route is divided into two sections. Section 1 is a four-lane reinforced concrete road spanning 16.53 km, while Section 2 is a two-lane reinforced concrete road covering 6.57 km.
DRR director-general Phichit Hunsiri said on Thursday that the project is nearing completion, with only a small portion of the road surface remaining to be completed.
Installation of traffic signs and street lighting is ongoing. Safety measures such as warning signs, flashing lights and dust control via watering are in place to ensure safety and air quality, Mr Phichit added.
