The Expressway Authority of Thailand (Exat) has announced plans for 11 new expressway projects spanning 170 kilometers with a total investment exceeding 273 billion baht. The expansion aims to enhance nationwide connectivity and address the increasing demand for traffic and improved logistics. Currently, Exat manages eight expressway routes totaling 224.6 kilometers, with August’s traffic volumes averaging 1.71 million vehicles daily and generating 65.61 million baht in toll revenues.
This expansion comes as part of efforts to bolster infrastructure and support the country’s economic growth. Two major projects are already underway: the Rama III–Dao Khanong–Western Outer Ring Road Expressway and the Chalong Rat Expressway Extension. The former is a 31.24-billion-baht investment of 18.7 kilometers, currently 91.02% complete and expected to open toll-free by the end of 2025. The latter, a 24-billion-baht project stretching 16.21 kilometers, is 0.66% complete and scheduled for completion in mid-2028.
Several projects are in various stages of approval. These include Phuket Expressway Phase 1 (Kathu–Patong), which has secured Cabinet approval and is in consultant and contractor selection processes. The second-level expressway from Ngam Wong Wan to Rama IX Road in Bangkok is under PPP Committee review for contract adjustments. Additionally, the Chalong Rat–Eastern Outer Ring Road (N2) section in Bangkok is preparing for Cabinet submission, and plans for a connector between Bangkok Port and the Bang Na–At Narong Expressway (S1) are under discussion.
Public-private partnerships are expected to be crucial in funding and managing these projects. This involvement is anticipated to facilitate efficient project delivery and sustainable operation. As the projects progress, they are expected to improve inter-region transport, reduce congestion, and support Thailand’s economic development goals.
